Our story

How we got here, and why we do it this way.

Our story

A caff that got
smartened up

Since 2016, and not much about it has changed.

Two Sugars was a greasy spoon for thirty-one years before we took it on, and we have tried very hard not to ruin it.

We kept the counter, the mugs and most of the regulars. We changed the coffee, put a proper oven in the back, and asked Jean if she would bake for us three days a week. She said two. It is now five.

The name came from Ron, who had the place before us and took two sugars in everything including, we suspect, his soup. He comes in on Tuesdays and tells us what we are doing wrong.

We are not trying to be a restaurant or a co-working space. We are a caff. There is a table at the back for whoever needs it, the heating goes on when someone asks, and nobody has ever been asked to leave for nursing one coffee.

How we got here

  • 2016

Took the keys off Ron. Kept the sign, replaced the coffee machine.

  • 2018

Jean started baking. The cakes got out of hand almost immediately.

  • 2021

Knocked through to the back room. Ten more seats and the long table.

  • 2024

Started doing catering after too many people asked.

  • 2026

Nine staff, most of them local, two of them Ron’s grandchildren.

Come and see

All of the above is easier to understand standing in the room with a coffee in your hand. We are open six days a week and nobody will try to sell you anything.
